What’s up people get ready for the silly season, Its wintertime when the summer exploits are a distant memory and the coats and scarves take effect.
I love it because bling take a backseat to practicality. Slowly but surely the urban scene is losing its love affair with all things that glitter and I aint talking sparklers on bonfire night. The media has always had pot shots at our music scene accusing it of lacking substance and being shallow and pretentious especially as so many hip hop moguls, artists and affiliated sports stars drip in diamonds whenever they made an appearance at a major event on TV or in some cases just on a trip to the local supermarket. All that coupled with the soft porn videos on constant rotation give some credibility to the argument that hip-hop inparticular has lost its way.

Keep your eyes peeled over the next few months, as I have a hunch that the coolest look will be the de-accessorised artists ( if there is such a word). Kayne West and Pharrell are 2 examples of artists who flirt with the bling thing. Sporting the odd chain or ring both are essentially nerdy or preppie with their regular attire, as is Andre 3000 from Outkast, who is another one who clearly doesn’t conform to hip hop’s fashion sense.
In the UK the likes of Dizzie Rascal, Craig David and Lemar don’t really bling so I feel the problem is almost exclusively American.

I remember getting a strange reaction from some MTV viewers when I first appeared on the Lick, as I wasn’t in the traditional basketball shirt or baseball cap. But aside from being too old to care I have never suffered from peer pressure or been a big fan of excessive bling on men. Of all the stars I have interviewed Nelly and Missy have worn the most but J-Lo has worn the most tasteful.

My uni freshers tour is all but over with the highlight for me being Loughborough ( wow what are they on?) the funniest was Keele when the fire alarm went off in the middle of my set, the toughest was Greenwich cos I was late as the Blackwell tunnel was closed (it’s a London thing).
The first soul nation party is confirmed at Klute in Bournemouth (info on home page) one for the more soulful amongst you. Big news now about my new years eve party, which will be broadcast live on radio1 alongside Ronnie Herel and DJ Diggz. Tickets will only be £10 in advance.

After 6 years on being Mr. Voice over man at the EMA’s ( MTV European music awards), my role changes this year to anchor man hosting the countdown live across Europe on the 19th November in Rome. The best award show in the world rolls into Rome with usher, Eminem, maroon 5, Nelly, Alicia keys etc… ( note to self – better bring my camera for the website).

Finally I just want to pay homage to radio1’s greatest ever broadcaster, Mr John Peel OBE who passed away in late October. I had the pleasure of being in John’s company a few times over the years and he was always charming and totally real. As a boy listening to radio1 he stood out as completely different to everyone on the station at the time. He just sounded honest, simple as that.
