| The Diary of Trevor Nelson aged @* and a half | ||
Instead of my usual monthly column I thought I’d let you in on a snap shot of the Valentines week in February.Monday 14th From midday I was just fielding calls for guest list, calls from DJ’s asking what time they should arrive and trying to secure the main PA for the night, who turned out to be US R&B star Joe. Oh yes the Lick Tsunami Party was on! Tickets where completely sold out, we raised well over £40K for the cause everyone had a tremendous time and there was love in the air, in-fact everywhere. At the end of the night the campaign had begun to bring back the lick parties, something that I hadn’t really considered especially as I don’t think we can top the gigs we have done in the past. But at Hammersmith Palais on Monday about 80% of the people spoken to had never been before so there is a whole new generation to consider. Tuesday 15th Woke up with a BIG sore-head feeling quite sad, why was I feeling so sad? (don’t worry its just a ritual of mine after a big night out). But had to drag myself to MTV for a pre-production meeting about a “Trevor meets” Samuel Jackson special. Only problem I hadn’t seen his new film Coach Carter so the film company hired a small 20 seat cinema for me which was a great chance for me to invite my friends and colleges to get a little pissed and watch the movie. By the way the film was pretty wholesome and Mister Jackson carried the film on his back and it was also Ashanti’s Hollywood debut. Wednesday 16th It was actually the second time I’d met tinsel towns largest grossing box office actor of all time (2nd is Harrison Ford). The first occasion was a 5 minute press junket for Jackie Brown, I was sure he wouldn’t remember me until we both realised we had a fetish for Frank Muller watches. I thoroughly enjoyed the interview, which you can catch on Sunday 27th feb at 7pm on MTV Base. Later that evening I went to radio1 for my Soul Nation show with the new Tweet album in my hand, which the record company wouldn’t allow me to play (so why give it to me then!) An EP that I’ve rinsed on the show, is a UK outfit Bare Knuckle Soul. Thursday 17th After 5 hours sleep I was whisked off to top producer Trevor Horn’s, Sarm West Studios for Sound Live for the Prince’s Trust Urban music workshop, an initiative for young disadvantaged musicians who get to perform in front of Prince Charles and then on stage at the Urban Music festival in April. They recorded a cover version of Bob Marley’s “No Woman no cry” in the very same studio as the great man himself. We were all impressed including Estelle who is also an ambassador for the trust. Our international ambassador for the festival on April 16th is Matthew Knowles, Beyonce’s father. Sorry I don’t have the full line up as yet. Friday 18th I must be the only DJ I know that doesn’t have a driver, so I sort my records out and leave London at 2pm for a 5hr Friday afternoon drive to Club Havannah in Southport for the BrownSugar boyz. It’s the first time I’ve been to Southport in about 4 years and with Manchester and Liverpool nearby it became a very northwest party at a classic old skool venue. They sure know how to party up there. Saturday 19th Long drive back to London for my radio1 Saturday show which is still my favourite gig of the week. The 3 hours fly by, I love the music I’m playing, the features and my guest this week on the phone was John Legend. Crawled home after the show and slept till Monday morning………… Just thought I’d share my week with you guys, see you next month……… |
