| My one question to Bob Geldof on the eve of Live8 was which part of the day he was most looking forward to, the start or the end. He paused for a moment and couldn’t really decide. Although I didn’t attend the gig due to other commitments, I caught most of it on TV. Yes people turned out in their droves to see the rock royalty on show going through a medley of hits in the limited time they had on stage but the event left me feeling slightly uneasy. The original live aid was exciting, uncharted territory, whereas Pink Floyd aside, we had seen it all before. Summed up with Robbie William’s classic karaoke turn on stage. Just as I was about to nod off, on came the Philly show with the Black Eyed Peas, Kayne West and Stevie Wonder, totally amazing and uplifting. These artists were a closer link to the day’s theme for African Aid and not just because of their ancestry. Geldof deserves praise but in multicultural Britain the Hyde Park line up was lacking diversity. One Urban artist who did grace the stage was Ms Dynamite, who is soon to drop her sophomore set. A welcome return from Ms Daley after 3 years out of the spotlight. I met up with her while making the album and heard some cuts which continued her social / political commentary. Craig David is back with a new single and album that is reminisencent of his debut. Littered with guitar and prominent melodies, he has abandoned the clubbier side of his second set and gone more for the comfort of the coffee table. It will be really interesting to see how these artists are received in the coming months after the emergence of Lemar, Estelle and the whole Grime scene. Watch this space for my review of Kayne West’s eagerly awaited follow up to the College Drop Out. “Late Registration”. Early listening reports it to be a hip hop masterpiece, though some suggest it maybe a little too worthy. The man himself has no doubts that it is a masterpiece and said on my radio1 show that the pressure doesn’t bother him and basically he is a genius. (we will see) Someone who I always believed to be special is Lauryn Hill although she is doing her utmost to erode her status. Leaving your fans waiting for 90 minutes while deciding what to wear is not a good look. I am not gonna judge her until I hear her new material, she is still my queen. This summer is all about Pacha in Ibiza on Tuesday night. The atmosphere in the Global room has been brilliant all season and myself and Nigel G have been mixing old skool with nu and on August 5th we’ll be guesting at Pete Tong and Jade Jagger’s night Jezebel. Also look out for our pre-parties at Savannah Bar in San Antonio. Party on people |
