| 2006 gets off to an unusal start | ||
| What’s happening everyone I hope the New Year has been good to you. I have been easing my way back into things after 4 weeks of eating resting and generally forgetting about the whole hectic scene. For the first time in years I didn't do a New Years Eve gig as my planned event in Preston was cancelled due to venue issues. It gave me the chance to reassess this very over hyped time of year, as more and more clubbers are looking for alternatives to huge overpriced club events. I decided to be a punter and went to a west end club for the 12 o’clock countdown, which was fairly flat and full of big brother, rejects so I bolted out of there and went to a mates flat in Brixton with a few friends a small stereo, drinks and nuff jokes. Now I understand why NYE as the big night out of the year has become the big night in. (I cant promise that I wont do a gig next year though). Back to work at radio 1 and the gravy train of artists passing through so far this year on my sat show have included Akon, Young Jeezy, Neyo and Chris Brown, check the radio 1 website for more info. I was blown away that R&B is still so big with again half of the UK top ten filled with urban tracks and the late great Notorious holding down the number one spot with a very musical re make of nasty girl. There are some new changes to both of my radio shows. On sat the last hour is now a request hour called your 'call’, where the listeners choose my playlist by text or phone and get a chance to play dj. Wednesday night’s soul nation has a new top 10 chart which is updated on this site every week and I play 3 tracks from the countdown, also check out the new feature called hi jacked where I play a big tune that has jacked a beat rhyme or bassline from a classic song. The new series of the lick for 2006 is well under way. I shot the first show in New York, which was damn cold but great fun. The main reason for our visit was an interview special with clothing mogul Mark Ecko whose empire is worth 800 million dollars and includes the g unit clothing line. The interesting thing about him is that he started out as a graffiti artist and has just devised an amazing computer game called getting up which may even become a movie (show airs on feb 26th mtv base). The new titles for the lick are amazing; maybe because I am not in them, they star an incredible model who strikes all the right chords. |
